The University of Vaasa was ranked in the 401-500 bracket worldwide in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024 edition. The rankings of 2024 assessed the performance of 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions.
The University of Vaasa has performed well in the latest THE World University Rankings, which lists the world’s best universities with an emphasis on the research mission. The university proved itself especially strong in Research quality, where it ranked in the top quartile with a score of 90,3 (top score = 99,7). The Research quality pillar is a key indicator for citation impact and research strength, excellence and influence in the ranking.
The university also ranked well above the median both in Research environment, with a score of 27,7 (median = 17,2), and in International outlook, with a score of 65,3 (median = 45,3). In terms of International outlook, the University of Vaasa is nearly in the top quartile (just 0,2 away from the 75 % threshold).
The university’s good performance in research quality and international outlook doesn’t go unnoticed among Finnish universities either, ranking 3rd nationally in both of the pillars. In terms of the overall rank, the University of Vaasa is 7th out of 10 nationally.
Martin Meyer, vice-rector of international affairs at the University of Vaasa, says that they are pleased with the result.
This ranking result shows that the University of Vaasa truly is an international research university. It brings forth research as one of our strengths and also acknowledges our continuous internationalisation efforts. The THE World University Ranking evaluates universities in five areas:
- Teaching (the learning environment);
- Research environment (volume, income and reputation);
- Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence);
- International outlook (staff, students and research); and
- Industry (income and patents).
The methodology for the World University Rankings was significantly updated this year, for the second time ever.
